Interdisciplinary Colloquium
Prof. Tatiana Philippova, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
As part of the department’s weekly research colloquium,
held every Thursday from 16:15 to 17:45 in the Webb Building (Room 103),
the following lecture by Prof. Tatiana Philippova (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) will take place:
Comparison in natural language as an interface phenomenon
Abstract:
This talk is devoted to comparative structures that express inequality, such as
Mary runs faster than Lisa.
Mary runs faster than she used to.
Mary runs faster than usual.
Lisa walks faster than Mary runs.
I will start out with a typology of these comparative constructions, focusing on how cross-linguistic variation has informed formal syntactic and semantic research to date. Against this background, I will address outstanding questions in this empirical domain, proposing a research program to tackle them comprehensively – at the interfaces of syntax, semantics, prosody and information structure.
All are welcome!
